What is Mid Century Modern?

If you were born after World War II, but before the Vietnam war, chances are you have lived in, or at least have been in Mid-Century modern houses.

Mid Century modern is an architectural design form developed from 1945 to 1965. Scandinavian designers and architects were very influential at this time, with a style characterized by simplicity, democratic design and natural shapes. The futuristic 1960's fashion architecture was fueled by the space race - our vision of what the twenty-first century would look like, blending the modern airy and unique roof lines with heavy fireplaces and natural woods.

Mid century modern house plans emphasized creating structures with large windows and open post and beam floor-plans with the intention of opening up interior spaces and bringing the outdoors in.

With Frank Lloyd Wright influence, living in these homes are unique in design and style. The Jetsons here we come.

The Mid 20th Century provided us with a great range of modern new furniture created by innovative and forward thinking designers and architects. After Depression and Wartime, people wanted to enjoy life, family, and leisure time. Men were back to work and making money, wives were home. The manufactors were producing lots of new products and now people had money to spend. They bought homes. Then they bought the modern furnishing and appliances needed to fill the home, things that were advertised in the media. The new color was pink.

With the introduction of new materials, chrome, PVC, plastic, and exploring the use of existing furniture materials, laminating timber and steam bending timber lead to a very broad range of exciting new 1950's fashion or style of chairs, tables and sofas never seen or thought of before.

This made the new modern houses, totally unique in the 1950 fashion design world.

Recently, hip young home buyers are snapping up these mid century modern homes as quickly as they become available. They are truly like living in a piece of art the likes of Jackson Pollock.
